“To the end of their lives I will drive them. There will be no fury as my fury.” The words are taken from ‘Will To Survive’, the opening track of In-Defilade’s second album, Elude. In those few words there lies a hint of the supreme, imperious, unassailable power that radiates from every note of this staggering release. The music moves through an array of moods and tempos, from the insidious slithering dread of ‘The Collapse’ to the tumultuous torrent of riffs and indefatigable blast beat assaults of ‘Fearing The Worst’, but at all times there is that sense of ultimate confidence, the unshakeable self knowledge that In-Defilade stand tall, subservient to none.
In-Defilade was first created by Jon Vesano, the man whose mighty bass and vocal roar can be heard on Nile’s revered Annihilation Of The Wicked and In Their Darkened Shrines albums and who fronted the dark, underground treasure of Darkmoon.
For the first In-Defilade album, Rulers Of Famine, Vesano was joined by Vesperian Sorrow’s Subverseraph and guitarist Shawn Lee Bozarth – known for his work with legendary thrash outfits Defiance and Ulysses Siren. Before work commenced on Elude Bozarth stood down from the ranks, but Vesano and Subverseraph ensnared drummer Erik Schultek (ex-Narcotic Wasteland) and the resulting chemistry is terrifying in its potency. Vesano’s vocals have never sounded so venomous as they do on Elude, blending brutality with a biting clarity as he enunciates his disdain for the weakness of humanity. The thunderous barrage of the rhythm section is soul-shaking, overwhelming, intimidating in its sheer unfathomable power and the riffs are a firestorm that fuses complexity with immediacy, a nuclear explosion of bewildering velocity, yet rife with barbed, inescapable hooks. Then scything through the maelstrom come the howling chaos of the solos, supplied by guest, friend and comrade in arms, Dallas Toler-Wade (ex-Nile, Narcotic Wasteland).
In-Defilade are coming and you have a choice to make – ride the storm with them, or be torn asunder as it passes over you. Elude is death metal of inhuman power and it will not be denied.
